As we wait excitedly for September 1st, the Doctor Who production team have already moved on from the first half of Doctor Who series 7 and are held up in the good town of Bristol as they film this year’s Christmas special of our favourite show.
Bristol’s Corn Street, a bustling shopping area, has been transformed into a “Winter Wonderland” as it takes on the appearance of 1890s London.
The involvement of Bristol in the Doctor Who world this year maintains a long relationship between it and Doctor Who alive after areas such as Portland Square and Waring Housing Estate have been used for previous series’ filming.
Fact fans may also like to know that a company called Bristol Blue Glass was used to design the TARDIS’s Time Rotor for the new look console room used from 2010 onwards. Mr Bob Baker, one of half of the writing team that created the Axons, Gel Guards, Eldrad and K-9 way back when, also hails from Bristol (he and Dave Martin were referred to by then script editor Terrance Dicks as “The Bristol Boys”) as well as two double Decker buses that were used in the filming of the 2009 Easter special Planet of the Dead. Bristol’s Forbidden Planet most famously held a Doctor Who fun day in 2011 to celebrate the return of the series to television. There were special offers on Doctor Who merchandise as well as the chance to talk to and be exterminated by a life size Dalek!
So while Bristol once again holds Doctor Who safely in its hands, let’s all take a moment to thank it for all that it’s done for Doctor Who over the years!
