He may be nearly forty, a remarkable age for a dog, but there’s no sign of K9 going the way of Old Yeller any time soon, with the Doctor’s faithful friend about to get his own book!
The Essential Book of K9, currently subject of a crowdfunding campaign, will explore his many lives in Doctor Who, K9 and Company, The Sarah Jane Adventures and his own recent series of adventures.
Paul Tams is collaborating with K9 creator Bob Baker to create a volume which promises to be the first book ‘dedicated to the full story of K9, his adventures in Time and Space and beyond and the making of the TV shows in which he appeared’.
Intriguingly, Tams promises that there’ll be new fiction for K9 fans to enjoy in the book, with ‘several new stories and comic strips from classic writers including his original creator’. Features, photos and behind the scenes details will make for a comprehensive guide.
The fundraising is already well on the way to its £5,000 target with perks ranging from the modest (£1 for a screensaver, £5 for a postcard) to a more substantial £50 for a signed copy with your name included in the book. The funding will pay for classic comic strip artists and deliver an extended colour page count, and free those putting it together from the need to cut costs to satisfy a publisher.
K9 has been one of Doctor Who’s most enduring characters with appearances in no less than three (count ‘em) spin off shows. He may not have been to everyone’s taste when he made his debut in The Invisible Enemy with Tom Baker’s Doctor but there’s no denying the genuine affection felt for him by many, nor his impressive recognition among the viewing public (an recent appearance on the Pointless Doctor Who special being a case in point).
